Sieve the flour, ginger and bicarbonate of soda into a large bowl. Using your fingertips rub in the butter until you get a fine breadcrumb texture, then add the sugar and stir in.

    For this step you'll need:

    • 350g Plain white flour
    • 1tsp Ginger (ground)
    • 1tsp Bicarbonate of soda
    • 100g Butter (unsalted) cubed, cold
    • 150g Unrefined light muscovado sugar
  3. 3

Whisk the beaten egg and the golden syrup and add to the bowl. Mix to form a dough.

    For this step you'll need:

    • 1 Egg(s) (free range) beaten
    • 4 tbsp Golden syrup
  4. 4

Lightly flour your work surface then roll out the dough to a thickness of 3-4mm, then using gingerbread family cutters, cut out the shapes, and lay each one out onto the baking trays.

  5. 5

Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes until golden brown.

  6. 6

Once baked, leave to cool on a wire rack.

  7. 7

Next using royal icing in a piping bag or white designer writing icing pipe the names of your family onto the biscuits. You can use these as gifts or name tags on presents.
