Hi, this is 1960HikerDude. Pasta and meat sauce is a satisfying and familiar meal. It dehydrates and rehydrates easily, making it ideal for backpacking. So, grab your favorite beverage, kick back, relax and enjoy the show.

Pour olive oil in the bottom of a large skillet. Add mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions.
In the meantime, brown the ground beef in a medium skillet.

Be sure to use the leanest group beef you can find. Be sure to break up any clumps. When browned, rinse the ground beef under hot water to remove as much fat as possible.

Add the ground beef to the veggies in the large skillet. Add garlic, pasta sauce, Italian seasoning and black pepper. Cover, reduce the heat and simmer.

Start the water for your pasta. When the water boils add the pasta to the pot and cook according to the package directions.

When the pasta is ready, drain it and return it to the pot. Add the veggies and sauce to the pot. Give it all a good mix.

Line your dehydrator trays with parchment paper. Distribute the pasta and meat sauce evenly over the trays. Dehydrate at 160 degrees for 6 hours. After 6 hours, flip the pasta and meat sauce using a spatula. Dehydrate for another 6 hours The pasta and meat sauce is fully dehydrated when it crumbles easily.

Divide it into 5 to 7 ounce portions. I like to use paper lunch bags for this. Roll up the bags and wrap them in parchment paper to keep the sharp edges from poking through your vacuum seal bags. Place the wrapped pasta and meat sauce inside the freezer bags and vacuum seal them.

Don’t forget to label and date your bags.

We’ve got several pre-packaged one pot meals. If you store these in the freezer, they’ll last about two years.

To rehydrate, place the dehydrated pasta and meat sauce in your cook pot. Add water to the level of the pasta. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Bring it to a boil on your backpacking stove. Give it a good stir. Place the pot in your cozy for fifteen minutes to continue rehydrating. Add additional water if needed to achieve the proper consistency.
