Traditional Newfoundland Turkey Pie - Bonita's Kitchen

Welcome to Bonita's Kitchen! Today we will be making Turkey Pie

Ingredients:

Filling:
1 Cup Chopped Turkey
1/2 cup chopped carrots
1/2 cup chopped turnip ( optional)
1/2 cup chopped potatoes
1/2 cup chopped celery
1/2 cup fresh or frozen peas
1 small chopped onion
1/4 cup flour
2 tbsp butter
1/2 cup milk
1 cup vegetable broth or chicken broth
Pinch sea salt
Pinch black pepper
Pinch savoury or sage
1/2 tsp onion powder

Pastry:

2 cup white or wheat flour
1/2 cup Cold Butter
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup cold water
1 piece wax paper

Method:

Prep time: 20min, cook time: 45min. Yield: 1 pie
Preheat oven to 350°

1 - Chop all vegetable's
2 - In a medium saucepan half full with water then start to boil, add all vegetable's cook for 5 minutes until tender. When cooked drain and set aside until you need it.
3 - In a large frying pan add butter and onions cook until onions are translucent, stir in flour, salt, pepper, onion powder, savoury or sage.
4 - Then whisk in broth, milk until it starts to thicken, remove from heat mix in your vegetables and turkey.
5 - Then put all mixture into your pastry pie pan, take another pastry pie and put on top of your mixture pinch together the sides.
6 - Bake for 45 minutes on a 350° oven or until golden brown depending on your oven, when baked remove from oven let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Pastry Method:

Mix flour, butter ( chop in pieces) and salt together in bowl mix with your hand or food processor when mixed add cold water mix until it shapes into a ball then remove from bowl/mixer.
Put a piece of parchment paper on the counter and sprinkle with flour then cut the ball into two pieces put your pastry ball on counter then roll until all even.

Double the recipe if you like to make more then one pie and if you are using salted butter, don't add salt.
